072 is part of the UK mobile-number range. UK mobiles use prefixes 071–075 and 077–079, with 076 reserved for radiopagers and 070 for personal-numbering services. Mobile numbers follow you between networks under number portability rules introduced in 1999 — so a 077, 078 or 079 number originally allocated to one network may now be on a different one entirely.

The block tables below show the network the prefix was originally allocated to by Ofcom. To find the current network for a specific number, you'd need a live MNP (mobile number portability) lookup against the central UK porting database — most major UK B2B telecoms providers offer this as a paid API.

The major UK mobile networks are EE (part of BT Group), O2 (part of Virgin Media O2), Vodafone, and Three (Hutchison 3G UK). Most other UK mobile brands are MVNOs — mobile virtual network operators — which lease network capacity from one of the four MNOs.

No Ofcom block allocations on file for 072 yet. This usually means the area is small, the block list is being refreshed, or our weekly sync hasn't yet picked up this prefix. Check back in a few days, or use the lookup form to search for the full number.
