How the UK numbering plan works
Every UK phone number is issued under Ofcom's National Telephone Numbering Plan. Numbers are allocated in blocks of 1,000 or 10,000 to a Communications Provider (a 'CP', like BT, EE, Three or Virgin Media), which then either uses them directly or sub-allocates them to downstream resellers. Because of number portability, a single number can move between CPs without changing the area code — meaning the original allocation isn't always the current network.
Geographic numbers (01x and 02x) historically reveal the city the line was set up in. Mobile numbers (07x, except 070 and 076) follow the subscriber rather than a location. 03 numbers are charged at standard UK landline rates, 080x numbers are free to call, and 084x/087x/09xx are service-charge or premium-rate ranges where the receiving organisation charges you per minute on top of your provider's access charge.

Is the number that called me a scam?
It depends. UK scam calls span every prefix — landline, mobile and even 0800. The clearest red flags are: an unsolicited call about your bank, HMRC, your energy supplier or 'your computer'; pressure to take action immediately; or a request for full security details, gift-card payments or remote-access software. If you're in doubt, hang up and call the organisation back on a number you know is genuine. You can report suspected scams to Action Fraud in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or to Police Scotland in Scotland.
How do I block a number on my UK phone?
On most UK smartphones you can tap the number in your recent-call list and choose 'Block this caller'. On UK landlines, BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media all offer a free 'call protect' service you enable in your provider's app or online portal. To stop legitimate UK marketing calls, register your number for free with the Telephone Preference Service; you should see a sharp drop in cold calls within 28 days.
What does it mean if my caller ID shows a UK number but the caller sounds foreign?
It usually means the call is being 'spoofed'. Spoofing makes a foreign or VoIP call appear to come from a UK landline so the recipient is more likely to answer. Ofcom has been working with UK networks since 2022 to block obviously-spoofed UK caller IDs at the network edge, but the tactic still slips through. If you receive a suspicious call from what appears to be a UK number, don't return the call; verify the organisation independently before sharing any information.
Does this look-up cost anything?
No. There's no fee, no sign-up, and we don't store or share your search history. We log only the normalised number (e.g. 02079461234) for the purpose of showing 'recently searched' counts on each block page; that record is anonymous and never tied to a person.
How fresh is the data?
The underlying allocation records are pulled from Ofcom's National Telephone Numbering Plan, which Ofcom updates every Wednesday. Our sync runs the following morning, so a freshly-allocated number block will appear here within 24 hours of going live in the official plan.
How do I report an unwanted call to UK authorities?
Report nuisance and silent calls to Ofcom. Report scam calls to Action Fraud (or 101 in Scotland). Marketing calls in breach of TPS can be reported to the ICO. If you're being harassed, contact your network — they can usually trace and block at the carrier level.
